Dollywood is about to set a record, in the world of roller coaster.

Last week, country superstar Dolly Parton announced in a theater packed with her fans:

It’s a big, big time for us. We get to make the biggest ride announcement that we’ve made in the history of Dollywood.

The largest single investment made by the amusement park is worth $22-million, all for a wooden roller coaster called Lightning Rod which will go as fast as 73 mph.

Dollywood Company President Craig Ross said:

Lightning Rod will be the world’s first — very first — launched wooden roller coaster. Just like a hot rod, Dolly, Lightning Rod uses 1,500 horse power.

The new ride is set to open to the public in March 2016, and don’t expect a hill to push the speed of the ride. Instead, the wooden roller coaster will start you up at 45 mph on a 3,800 feet track including a 165 feet drop. This is some serious glee up in the air at 73 mph, so you can swoop, Superman-style.

Parton is exhilarated just by watching a video:

I’m gettin’ motion sickness just lookin’ at that. You know I’m not gonna ride that thing.

As the biggest “ticketed” tourist attraction in Tennesse, Dollywood is owned by Parton and Herschend Family Entertainment. Located in the Knoxville-Smoky Mountains metroplex in Pigeon Forge, Dollywood welcomes over 3 million visitors in a typical season.

Since 1986, Dollywood has expanded beyond regular amusement park rides. It also highlights traditional crafts and music of the Smoky Mountain region. The park hosts numerous concerts and musical events every year, including shows by Parton and her family, national and local musical acts. It’s also the site of the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame which is composed of pioneers in the field of Southern gospel music.

This summer, a hotel named DreamMore Resort opened to the public. It’s situated on a hill right next to Dollywood.
