Bet you never knew that as you climb up those rigorous steps to the top of the Eiffel Tower, there’s a plush apartment for the tower’s designer Gustave Eiffel right on the third floor.

The world’s most popular touristic destination was created by Eiffel in 1889. The tower was considered an architectural phenomenon at the time, the apartment space he built was a personal sanctuary as a self-congratulatory gift.

According to the book La Tour Eiffel de Trois Cent Métres, author Henri Girard described the interior as such:

Furnished in the simple style dear to scientists.

The apartment is situated 1,000 feet above ground and holds a grand piano, wooden chests, paintings and mannequins. Yes, it absolutely has the view of the City of Light. Eiffel often hosted guests including Thomas Edison who gave him the gift of a phonograph machine.

Eiffel frequently rejected offers from Parisian socialites to rent out the apartment, he would refuse even one night rentals. For him, the apartment was his personal space to think in the middle of the city but feeling quite far from it as well.

Today, the apartment is still off limits from public viewing. But the next time you catch a sunset from the top of the tower, you’ll know Eiffel was doing the same just a few floors below.
