During last year’s World Cup, housing became an issue for many visitors due to Rio’s poor hotel framework. In 2013, when Pope Francis visited the city, masses of religious travelers had to sleep in churches or on the floor of local schools.

The new deal, released on Friday, entails Airbnb signing an undisclosed amount to Olympic organizers. Marketing and promotional efforts will be highlighted on various websites to encourage travelers to use Airbnb as a lodging option during the games.

This is also the first time the Olympics will incorporate an alternative accommodation as an official sponsor.

In 2009, when Rio won the Olympic bid, it fell 20,000 beds short of the number required for the games. Currently, the city has 42,000 beds needed for housing Olympic athletes, their groups and media sponsors. Airbnb has 20,000 listings throughout Rio, including: rooms, apartments and houses.

CEO of Rio 2016 organizing committee, Sydney Levy, said:

When we started all that (Olympic bidding process) several years ago, the major problem was hotels. How are we going to host so many people.

38,000 travelers are expected to flock to Rio during the Olympic games, Airbnb accommodations will make it possible for even more people to visit the city in 2016. Besides Paris, London, and New York, Rio is also one of the top cities for Airbnb users.

Airbnb’s chief product officer, Joe Gebbia, said:

We’re ready for the expected 380,000 spectators who are coming to Rio for the Olympic games, and we’re ready to show them what traditional, authentic Brazilian hospitality looks like.
