BY NADIA CHO

Despite the unease and awkwardness many people may feel about traveling alone, taking a trip entirely solo can actually be super awesome. It’s an amazing feeling to have complete control over your trip itinerary without having to take anyone else’s desires into consideration. Only having to accommodate yourself means that you can eat, sleep and explore when you want to and you don’t feel stingy whenever someone wants to pay for activities you don’t want to do, nor do you have to feel guilty if you want to indulge your personal whims. There’s no pressure to show anybody that you are continually having a good time.

Visiting a new location alone is a time when you can simply wander through space and take in the scene around you with no distractions. Being alone makes you focus more on who and where you are. It is unassuming, calming and revitalizing. If you want a vacation that is truly relaxing, during which you don’t have to worry about anyone else’s fancies except for yours, you should seriously consider taking a trip alone. Being around people can take up a lot of energy, especially in a travel setting in which you have to be with them 24/7.

The only trip I’ve ever been on that had absolutely no problems or preoccupations was the holiday during which I traveled alone in Italy for a week. It is also the only vacation from which I came back feeling genuinely rested and recharged and ready to go back to my life and relationships. So if taking a solo trip sounds like something you might be into, here are some trips to follow in order to make the best of your lone-wolf adventure.

1. Choose a big destination with lots of sights

Keep yourself busy by going to a place with lots of sites and landmarks to check out. Normally when traveling with other people, everyone has to compromise according to what each person wants to see and/or moving in a groups takes too much time. Thus if you are exploring alone you’ll have a better chance of seeing all the noteworthy sites on the map and only the ones that you actually want to see.

2. Bring a book that is action-packed and really long

An enthralling and emotionally captivating book can be a way more interesting and fun dinner date than a real live human being. Find a book attuned to your taste that is long enough to last throughout your entire trip that you can read during meals, in famous plazas and in a cozy bar over a nightcap. The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden by Jonas Jonasson, Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón are amazing, critically acclaimed novels that seem to go on forever, that would serve as worthy companions during your fearless travels.

3. Write to your loved ones

Writing letters and postcards is a lovely and special way to share your journey with the people you love, even if they’re not physically there with you. It is a way to feel connected to your friends and family if you’re feeling lonely and the distance you feel away from them will make you more excited to go back home at the end of your travels. Distance truly does make the heart grow fonder, as does receiving postage from someone you love in a faraway place.

4. Create a soundtrack for your journey

One of the greatest joys about being by yourself is that you have the opportunity to plug in your headphones and have theme music while you walk around and see around new locales. It’s a chance to set up a repertoire of music that you’ll be able to associate with a particular trip whenever you listen to it in the future.

5. Learn to enjoy your own company

Having a good time all alone is a skill that one acquires and develops over time. It is a process of getting to know yourself such as what things make you happy and cultivating confidence and ease around doing things alone in public. Contrary to what you might assume, nobody around you cares that you are alone and most people won’t notice what you are doing. Therefore, take this time to be yourself and get comfortable doing things you like as a party of one. Become somebody that you would want to be when looking at yourself from the outside.

6. Treat Yo’ Self

Make this ultimate diva mantra the underlying theme of your trip because as the sole traveler, this trip is all about you! You have already treated yourself big time by going on this amazing journey, now keep the good times rolling by treating yourself to how ever many goodies within your spending limit to get some real R&R. Hell yes I will have that wine and try that new entrée and have dessert at a cute window table and enjoy every minute of it. Make this trip the one you’ll remember as the vacation during which you had everything your way.
