1.3 kilometers away from Sydney Opera House, Lindt Chocolate Cafe in the heart of the city is under attack today.

On Monday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m., a gunman, described to be unshaven, in a white shirt, black cap and a shotgun, held hostages inside the cafe and demanded an ISIS flag along with a phone call with Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

According to Australian reporters, five hostages were able to escape the cafe with the help of police a few hours after the standoff. Hostages were shown to hold a black flag in Arabic writing,

There is no God but God and Mohammed is the prophet of God.

Identified as Man Haron Monis, the gunman is also known as Seikh Haron who pleaded guilty to letters written to the Australian service members indicating they were “Hitler’s soldiers” back in 2013. U.S. law enforcement and intelligence sources predict that gunman acted alone in the Sydney cafe attack.

Hostages included both staff and customers. The number of hostages is still unclear as reports say at least 13 people were being held but fewer than 30. They were held captive as people were heading to work in a typically bustling area of Sydney’s city center.

If you’re traveling near Martin Place today, train station was shut down and police barricaded off streets and evacuated nearby buildings within the proximity of the cafe.

Editor and columnist at The Australian, Chris Kenny, was at the cafe prior to the attack. He tweeted:

Although Australia is part of the international coalition against ISIS, it has yet to be determined whether the attack at the cafe this morning was linked to an extreme terrorist plot. While Muslim leaders in Australia have called this attack as a criminal act.

Thoughts from leaders around the world are taking over Twitter feeds:

At 2:46am Sydney time, the NSW Police tweeted:
