Does a female traveler need to worry for Ubering in India?

On Sunday, an Uber driver Shiv Kumar Yadav was arrested in his hometown of Mathura by the Indian police. Alleged crime? He raped a young woman.

Located 100 miles south of New Delhi in northern India, Yadav is accused of raping a 27-year-old woman who works at a finance company. The incident occurred on her way home from a dinner Friday night.

According to BBC, Delhi Special Commissioner Deepak Mishra said:

Our initial investigations have revealed shortcomings of the private cab company which didn’t have GPS installed in its cabs and the staff wasn’t verified.

Also reported by The Hindu, the woman fell asleep during the Uber ride. She discovered the car parked in a secluded location after waking up. She said that’s when the driver threatened and raped her.

In an act of protest against increasing cases of rape in New Delhi, groups from All India Students Association gathered and scuffled outside of the police headquarters in the capital. One young woman said,

There’s a rape in New Delhi again now and it’s been, like, how many years? I am doing this because I think this is my social responsibility to stand for something that I am against.

For a long time, Indian police and government did not do much regarding cases of sexual violence or aggression. Since December 2012’s tragic gang rape inside a moving New Delhi bus, the national outcry triggered Indian government to take action by doubling prison sentences for rapist to 20 years. The law also refers to criminalizing, stalking and trafficking women as well as targeting police who ignore cases when reports are made. With 25,000 rapes occurring in India annually, experts say the reported number is only a tiny fraction of the truth.

On the other hand, Uber has been growing immensely in India but there’s also been complaints regarding insufficient background checks on drivers.
