This week, after JetBlue announced the implementation of additional baggage fees and adding 15 seats to Airbus A320 planes, increasing capacity from 150 to 165 (goodbye, legroom!) Southwest Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer Bob Jordan immediately rode the wave and posted on Southwest’s blog:

Did you hear the news today? Feeling a bit blue, perhaps, at the thought of yet another bag fee out there? Don’t fear – Southwest Airlines has your back, and your bag – and you can take great comfort in knowing that bags fly free for all at! Today, we stand alone as the only domestic airline that can say that, which is a tremendous source of pride for the nearly 46,000 People of Southwest Airlines.

In addition to the airline’s promoted hashtag #BagsFlyFree, without JetBlue offering the same service now, Southwest proudly wears the crown as the only airline providing free checked baggage.

Southwest has also filmed a new commercial highlighting two free checked baggage, set to air this weekend.

Just last year, the industry were calling it the “JetBlue effect” in which a study showed the ultra-low-cost carrier was able to show a greater impact on decreasing airfare while Southwest had less ability to do so.

JetBlue announced changes this week after meeting with investors in New York who have been pushing the company to increase revenue and profit margins.
