Jetset With: Indie Pop Duo Halcyon Drive

BY LENA KAZER

Halcyon Drive profile

A few weeks ago, our contributor from down under, Evan Molineux, blew our minds with an ear-gasm compilation of 13 New Australian Musicians Deserve Your Undivided Attention.

One of the standout artists was Halcyon Drive, a duo of vocalist Mick Oechsle and drummer Max Pamieta. Their easy-listening indie tunage has an addictive balance of feeling-the-feels vocals and upbeat catchy hooks. It has the optimistic feel reminiscent of your first garage concert, when curfew came and went and getting grounded was worth it.

Joining us for our latest Jetset With interview, Mick and Max dropped some knowledge on us, including some dope album recommendations. Read on to learn a little bit more about the latest indie-crooners to take over our travel playlist.

Halcyon Drive Live

Mick Oechsle – Vocals

If you’re soul embodied a city, which would it be and why?

Mick: Am I allowed to say Melbourne?! If not, really any place with that deep-set creative underbelly – maybe Berlin.

One surprising item you can’t be without on the road?

Mick: Three notebooks: one for drawing, one for general writing, and one journal. Oh, and my trusty favourite pen.

What is your favorite restaurant in the world and what do you always order?

Mick: Wow- toughie!  Just because of my background, not sure I can go past traditional south German pub fare…meat and potatoes any day!

What artists are on your go-to playlist right now?

Mick: The War on Drugs, Department of Eagles, Spoon, #1 Dads, and the Broken Bells.

Which do you think is the most beautiful language in the world?

Mick: English spoken with a thick European accent of basically any variety 😉

How you feel about travel in a five word or less statement:

Mick: Can’t get enough!

Max Pamieta – Drums

If you’re soul embodied a city, which would it be and why?

Max: Tehran. It’s gritty, slightly frenetic, and surprisingly unexpected but with a gooey considerate centre.

One surprising item you can’t be without on the road?

Max: Earplugs. Travel takes you to unexpected locations. Being a light-sleeper, earplugs are my sanctuary.

What is your favorite restaurant in the world and what do you always order?

Max: Typically I prefer variation, however I did visit a bar/restaurant in Kiraly Utca, Budapest on multiple occasions within the short period of time being there. It was an ace combination of cosmopolitan cuisine and décor buried in a grimy façade. Shamefully, I cannot recall the place’s name.

Early morning rising for music video making! #apart - @halcyondrive

What artists are on your go-to playlist right now?

Max: Kimbra’s new album the Golden Echo is ever recurring though my headphones; such a super collection of pop themes with sprinkles of soul. On the other hand, I have been delving back into the alternative sounds of the ephemeral supergroup ‘One Day as a Lion’ featuring Zach De la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine, Jon Theodore from The Mars Volta, and Joey Karam from The Locust.

Which do you think is the most beautiful language in the world?

Max: There is something oh so sweet about Zimbabwe’s national language, Shona.

How you feel about travel in a five word or less statement:

Max: The ultimate escape act!
