Keep Portland Weird? How about “Keep Portland Welcoming”!

Filmmaker and writer Mario Garza is showcasing the popular city in the Pacific Northwest as one full of warm welcomes. Who wouldn’t want to move there?

Garza and his girlfriend Sarah recently moved to Portland. November 6th would be Sarah’s first birthday celebrated in her new city. To make sure she felt loved instead of homesick, Garza stood in the city’s Pioneer Square with a camera to record hundreds of strangers saying “Happy Birthday” to his girlfriend.

Not only has the video gone viral and crowning Garza with the title of Best Boyfriend of the Year, he also created a Tumblr page: Say Happy Birthday Sarah, so well wishers can record their own birthday messages to post.

After being recruited by an advertising agency, Sarah moved to Portland five months ago then Garza followed a month ago. He told The Oregonian:

It was just a very simple idea. You go to another city, and you don’t know that many people, so I had an idea. What if I could get Portland to say happy birthday to her? I wanted to give her a unique gift.

If this is Portland’s version of weird, then let’s keep it even weirder!

PS. Happy belated, Sarah!
