JST Drive: The Bay Area’s Best Motorcycle Routes

Ask any rider and they’ll tell you that the best part about riding are the twisties. A good rider isn’t judged on how fast he or she can go, but by how well he or she can lean into a turn (the lower the better) and not taste pavement. That’s what it’s all about.

Though it may be a bit short (22 miles and 40 minutes for my route), it has plenty of twists and turns to get your adrenaline going while not being too tiring. It has a great scenic route, with some nice paved roads (except for parts of Pinehurst Road, watch out for loose gravel and a few pot holes), and, not to mention, perhaps one of the best views of the Bay Area along Grizzly Peak! Feel free to stop and enjoy the view. There’s a reason why you always see tourists and locals venture out to this spot.

You’ll also pass by the Chabot Space Center on Skyline Blvd. which is always worth a visit no matter when you go. For a quick detour to UC Berkeley, turn left on Centennial Dr. off of Grizzly Peak, where you’ll pass the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens (open to the public daily) and find yet another amazing view of the bay, as well as a close up look of the newly renovated Memorial Stadium as you descend downwards.

For grub you really can’t go wrong with any spot in Berkeley, to be honest. But I like to keep it simple after a ride, so La Val’s would be my choice. I mean beer, pizza (they have a pretty varied menu too), TVs, a real laid back place and just a nice spot to relax after a great ride.

Got a favorite motorcycle route? Let me know in the comments below.

All videos shot using GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition on 1080p SuperView at 30 FPS. A superb camera that I would highly recommend to anyone. Click here for more information.
