[GALLERY] Celebrating 100 Years Of Commercial Aviation

BY JERRY ALONZO LEON vintage commercial airplane

There’s a good chance that wherever you’ve been in the world, it was a plane that took you there. It may be difficult to imagine but it was only one hundred years ago (January 1, 1914) that the first paid commercial flight took place and, from that singular event, an entire industry was ushered into existence that would change the world as we know it.

Today, the globalization of the aviation industry has made it an integral part of our daily lives, supporting 57 million jobs and $2.2 trillion in global economic activity. Each year, 50 million tons of cargo are transported via air transport (representing $6 trillion in global goods or 35% of all goods traded internationally). On any given day, 8 million people are expected to fly and in 2013 more than 3.1 billion people took to the air, the first time that mark has ever been achieved.
